Beer Pongers came together Thursday night for a small yet competitive event on the Peninsula in Newport Beach, CA. The tournament started with 16 teams all from the Newport Beach area and 1 keg of beer. By the time the event was over at 1:30 am we had 1 victorious team, no beer, and a few handfuls of drunken pongers. The final game came down to Sean Gallinger (SG) and Eric Gallinger (EG) against Nick “Buckle”(NB) and the infamous “Retard Strength” Steven (RSS) from 46th ST.
The final breakdown of the Newport Beach Pong Tournament:
NB won the eye-to-eye throw and started the game for his team. He started them out strong by hitting his first cup. When it was Retard Strength Steven’s turn he crushed the same cup blowing away another two cups. As the balls came back, RSS quickly splashed another ball in the beer making it six to ten but NB missed completely. SG and EG came back strong and slammed two cups a piece before their turn ended.
The next up, NB and RSS both missed giving SG and EG a real chance to gain some ground. EG threw and crushed his ball into another cup while SG missed again. The match is now four to six with Gallinger advantage. Next up Retard Strength Steven came with a fiery line drive right at the back left cup. NB followed in pursuit hitting that same cup making it back to their favor three to four. Leaving them with a terrible formation since it was mid-turn, NB was lucky that he knocked one more in before his turn was over.
The next round both SG and EG missed again and might I say Sean must have been feeling his beer because his throw was completely terrible. Completely!
With only two cups left Steven sees that the Gallingers are a little drunk and goes for the unexpected bounce. Little did he know Sean Gallinger as messed up as he was, was able to dive almost onto the table to save them from the elimination. Buckle (NB) cleared the hazy fog from his head and sank one more beer cup making it one to four.
The Gallingers having quite the challenge in front of them to catch up take their dip out of their mouths, put their beers down, and attempt to put their games faces on. Even dipless, this turned out to be a sorry attempt because the alcohol consumed was too strong to keep them throwing in the right direction, let alone in the area of the cups, hence both missed badly.
Luckily, Nick Buckle can handle his beers and had no problem drinking his beer as well as the ones RSS wouldn’t drink. Sober as one could be after the countless beers, Nick B steps up to the table and cleanly sinks the last cup.
In their rebuttle, Sean Gallinger was able to sink one cup but not any of the others. All in all it was a great night of drinking beer with local Newport Beach Pongers.
